Recently, our graduate students had the opportunity to attend the 2025 SIAM Conference hosted at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Student Reflections
Dauda Gambo PhD Student, Applied Math
“The 10th SIAM Conference was a really energizing experience for me. I presented in a mini symposium on the first day, and the questions that came afterward were thoughtful and pushed me to see my work from a few new angles. I also sat in on several talks about recent advances in numerical PDEs and kinetic solvers, which were both enlightening and directly relevant to my research. It definitely sparked some new ideas I’m excited to explore. Along the way I met many people doing fascinating work, but the standout moment was getting to talk with Prof. Xiu He, one of the plenary speakers and a leading expert on local DG methods for finite elements. We spoke for a while, I was able to pick her brain, and I even ran a DG idea for kinetic solvers by her, which made the whole conference especially memorable and encouraging. Thank you for such an opportunity to share my experience.”
Kanishka Goyal PhD Student, Math
“I recently attended the SIAM Central States Section Conference held at the University of Arkansas from October 11–12. It was a great experience to connect with researchers and students from different universities and learn about a wide range of topics in applied mathematics. I presented my research and received valuable feedback and comments, especially helpful as I prepare for my upcoming preliminary exam. Overall, the conference was both academically enriching and personally motivating.”
Lin Feng PhD Student, Applied Math
“Attending the SIAM Central States Section Conference in Arkansas was a wonderful experience. The conference offered a wide range of sessions across different research themes, and I carefully selected talks related to my research interests in optimization and applied mathematics. While listening to the talks, I took detailed notes—especially on ideas that inspired me or raised new questions. I was also honored to give a presentation on my recent work on adaptive gradient methods and greatly appreciated the insightful questions from two faculty members afterward, which encouraged me to view my research topic from new perspectives. During the coffee breaks, I had the pleasure of meeting two fellow Ph.D. students—one from Missouri University of Science and Technology and the other from Purdue University. Although our research areas differ, we had engaging discussions on topics such as data science and machine learning, and even talked about the potential for future interdisciplinary collaboration. Overall, the conference was both inspiring and motivating, and it strengthened my sense of connection to the SIAM community. I am also very grateful to my advisor for the valuable feedback on my slides and presentation, as well as to our department for organizing the group trip to the conference.”
Galiya Myrzabayeva, PhD Student
“I had a very positive experience attending the 10th Annual SIAM Central States Section Meeting in Arkansas. The conference started by the plenary talk by Prof. Beatrice Riviere, “Computational Methods for Two-Phase Flows at the Pore Scale,” which partially aligns with my research interests. I also attended minisymposiums such as “PDEs: Modelling, Numerics, and Applications,” which were very relevant to my work. This was my first time presenting at a conference, and I spoke about “Limiting Strategies for High-Order Discontinuous Galerkin Methods Based on Entropy Dissipation.” I enjoyed connecting with people in computational mathematics and learning new techniques that I can apply to my research going forward.”
