Iowa State Mathematics Ph.D. Student Receives Prestigious Simons Dissertation Fellowship

The Department of Mathematics is proud to announce that Dauda Gambo, a doctoral candidate in mathematics at Iowa State University, has been selected to receive a 2026 Simons Dissertation Fellowship in Mathematics, one of the nation’s most prestigious awards for graduate students in the mathematical sciences.
Awarded by the Simons Foundation, the fellowship recognizes exceptional Ph.D. students whose research has demonstrated significant impact and who show outstanding promise for future contributions to mathematics. The foundation expects to award only about 40 fellowships nationwide, making the program highly competitive.
Gambo conducts his research under the supervision of Professor James Rossmanith, whose mentorship has helped guide his development as a researcher and scholar. The fellowship is a testament to both Gambo’s research accomplishments and the strong graduate research environment within Iowa State’s Department of Mathematics.
The Simons Dissertation Fellowship provides two years of support during the final stages of a student’s doctoral program, allowing fellows to focus on advancing their dissertation research, collaborating with researchers at other institutions, attending professional conferences, and preparing for future careers in academia, industry, and government.
Established in honor of mathematician and philanthropist Jim Simons, the Simons Dissertation Fellowship supports exceptional doctoral students as they complete their Ph.D. studies. Recipients are selected based on the quality of their research achievements, the significance of their previous work, and the promise of their future research programs.
