The Mathematics Department is proud to announce that four faculty received awards at the Liberal Arts and Sciences 2024 Fall Convocation!
Congratulations to Claus Kadelka, Paul Barloon, Bernard Lidický, and James Rossmanith! Details can be found below.
A highly productive researcher in mathematical biology, Claus Kadelka has published several high-level publications, acquired substantial external funding, and guided innovative student research. While at Iowa State, Kadelka has built an internationally recognized research program that attracts strong mathematical biology graduate students to ISU. His interdisciplinary work and research have high societal and public health value.
Paul Barloon is enthusiastically endorsed by students in his entry-level mathematics courses for his caring treatment, outstanding teaching, and calming reassurance that their class time and homework will serve them well in the future. He is consistently aware of students’ level of understanding and builds their mathematics courses from that base. Students feel Barloon’s enthusiasm for the subject and appreciate the beauty of mathematics, thanks to his efforts.
Since joining ISU in 2014, Bernard Lidický has made substantial research contributions, including being a world leader in the use and implementation of the flag algebra method, which he leveraged to solve many well-known conjectures that had stumped mathematicians for decades. His publication record excels in quantity and quality, with many of his papers appearing in the discipline’s top journals. He has extensive external funding and is attached as a PI or co-PI to multiple high-profile grants. He has mentored six Ph.D. students, three postdocs, and has collaborated with countless early career mathematicians.
James Rossmanith embodies excellence as both a professor and a mentor to his students. He shows genuine interest in their academic journeys and encourages students to seek guidance from him regularly. A student says Rossmanith “tailors his mentoring style to his individual students. He pays close attention to what allows each student to excel and adapts to their specific personality and research style.” A fellow faculty member says Rossmanith is “an ideal role model for his students interested in pursuing an academic career”.
