The 78th William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition was held in December 2017. The exam is the preeminent undergraduate mathematics competition in the United States and Canada, involving two 3-hour sessions solving 12 problems.
This year Matthew Slane (’18 computer science and mathematics) finished in the top 500 for individuals. In addition, the team of Gavin Nop (’18 mathematics), Ben Frankel (’19 computer science and mathematics), and Harry Crane (’18 mathematics) finished 38th in the country, each earning scores in the 20’s.
