The Iowa State Mathematics Research Teams (ISMaRT) program offers undergraduate students the opportunity to engage in collaborative, hands-on mathematical research. Each team typically includes 2–4 undergraduates and is guided by a postdoctoral research associate, a faculty mentor, and a graduate student. Together, they explore real-world mathematical problems in a supportive, team-based environment.
Students participating in ISMaRT may earn up to 2 credits of Math 490, which includes significant writing and an oral presentation component. Credit must be arranged in advance with the faculty mentor at the start of the project.
Some projects may offer funding through the department’s RTG (Research Training Group) grant or the LAS Dean’s High Impact Award for Undergraduate Research. If you’re interested in funding, speak with your mentor once you’ve been matched to a project.
Applications for ISMaRT are accepted on a rolling basis, with priority given to those submitted early in the academic year. Check the department website for current deadlines and application details.
