Celebrating Faculty Excellence in Mathematics

Author: vsiefken

The Department of Mathematics is proud to recognize outstanding faculty members for their recent achievements (in no particular order).

Dr. Ryan Martin has been awarded the prestigious Fulbright-University of Birmingham Scholar Award (All Disciplines). He will spend the academic year from September 2025 to June 2026 at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom. This marks his second Fulbright Scholar award, having previously received the Budapest Semesters in Mathematics–Rényi Institute award, underscoring his continued international impact in mathematical research and collaboration. Steve Butler will be using this award to help fund mathematical outreach to schools throughout Iowa through site visits with faculty in the mathematical sciences to interact with teachers, students, and/or parents.

Dr. Steve Butler has been honored with the Marvin A. Pomerantz Award, which celebrates Iowa State faculty who demonstrate exceptional commitment to teaching, research, service, and outreach. This recognition includes a $5,000 award to support his ongoing contributions and innovative work in mathematics education and engagement. Steve Butler – Pomerantz Article

Dr. Songting Luo (Iowa State University) and Dr. Youzuo Lin (UNC-Chapel Hill) have been awarded $501,836 in funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for the project “Collaborative Research: Scientific Computing Assisted Machine Learning for Wave Imaging.” NSF Funds Awarded to Collab Research for Wave Imaging

Dr. Rana Parshad is a Co-Principal Investigator on the newly awarded $999,745 NSF grant for the interdisciplinary project “VAScTWIN,” which integrates mathematics, gene editing, and computational modeling to advance cardiac vascular regeneration. Dr. Ruoyu Wu received the LAS Award for Early Achievement in Research, honoring his impactful contributions to mathematical research early in his academic career. His work in analysis and probability has already garnered national attention and continues to elevate the department’s research profile. LAS Fall Convocation Honors Ruoyu & Stinga

Dr. Pablo Raúl Stinga was awarded the LAS Award for Mid-Career Research, recognizing his sustained excellence and leadership in mathematical research. Dr. Stinga’s work in partial differential equations and harmonic analysis has significantly advanced the field and inspired both students and colleagues. LAS Fall Convocation Honors Stinga & Ruoyu

Dr. Pablo Raúl Stinga will also be awarded the 2026 Levi L. Conant Prize by the American Mathematical Society for his article “Fractional Derivatives: Fourier, Elephants, Memory Effects, Viscoelastic Materials, and Anomalous Diffusions,” published in Notices of the AMS. The paper offers an engaging journey from the origins of fractional calculus to its modern applications in phenomena such as population growth, viscoelastic materials, and anomalous diffusion. Stinga, a professor at Iowa State University, is recognized for his clear and insightful exposition that makes complex ideas accessible to a broad audience. Stinga to Receive 2026 Levi L.
